Latest column system project

Tha´s an increddibly cool idea here!
Less material then the Makerbeam and still string.

Maybe make the base a triangle to make it stronger with even less amterial. (You can move one side of a quad without the other. Try that on a triangle and you´ll notice you can´t.)

Nice, I bet that ends up pretty rigid. I was amazed by the strength and rigidity of that short section of Kyle's truss that I printed ages ago.

Good to see somebody perusing this field. There must be an almost infinite variety of sparse 3D printed beams and columns to explore.

When the infill is sparse as well you have a nested lattice system. I wonder if anybody has worked on this in the academic world. I wouldn't know what to call it to search for it.

I intend to design end caps for the structural module so that I can string a bunch of them together and then post-tension them.

Impressive as usual ;-)

You could probably get away with a triangular column too, and get similar strength.

I guess even more rigidity can be obtained when you ensure that the corners of all triangles meet at the vertical columns. The current layout seems more appropriate for beams that need to be able to flex a bit.

Guys, try not to make too much of this particular "design". I'm totally aware that it's not perfect. Heavens! It may be a total dead end.

I put it together mostly to see what kinds of problems I'd have generating this complex a shape in Art of Illusion There are a lot, but it's not impossible if you check STLs along the way with the free version of Netfabb.

I also created it to see what kinds of issues I run into actually trying to print it. There are a lot of those, too.

The only reason that I posted it on my blog was that I was chatting on the Reprap IRC two nights ago and someone asked what I was working on, so I posted a pic of what I was currently trying to print on my blog so that he would have a link that he could look at. That's why there is no narrative to go with the picture. :-)
